Although there are 18 bat species in the UK, in general, bats prefer warm climates and therefore the numbers of species depletes the further north you go, and the colder it gets. As Westmorland and Furness is part of Cumbria, and therefore quite far north, there are records for only 11 species and regular sightings of only eight of those;
- Common Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus)
- Soprano Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pygmaeus)
- Nathusius Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus nathusii)– rare
- Brandts Bat (Myotis brandtii)
- Whiskered Bat (Myotis mystacinus)
- Natterers Bat (Myotis nattereri)
- Daubentons Bat (Myotis daubentonii)
- Noctule (Nyctalus Noctula)
- Brown Long Eared (Plecotus auritus)
- Alcathoe Bat (Myotis alcathoe)– rare
- Leisler’s Bat (Nyctalus leisleri) – rare
