The South Cumbria Bat Group organise informal events mostly in Cumbria but members occasionally organise events in North Lancashire and West Yorkshire, often in collaboration with other bat groups.
We welcome new members to the group. If you would like to attend an event to see what we do, you are more than welcome to attend without commitment. We would ask any person interested in attending an event to contact us, as venues and times can change at short notice due to adverse weather conditions.
If you have a club, society or school who would like to hear a talk on bats and bat conservation, please contact us and we will try to find a volunteer in your area, who may also be able to show you captive bats from a rehabilitation and release program.
Events we regularly run:
Levens Tree Roost Checks:
We currently run regular surveys at Levens Hall, where we check the beautiful veteran oak trees for natural bat roosts. To date we have found over 15 roosts of at least four species; noctule, common pipistrelle, soprano pipistrelle and Daubenton’s bats.
Link Pot Hibernation Checks:
Every winter (January and February) we check for hibernating bats in Link Pot and the Easegill dry river system. This involves abseiling down into Link Pot where we regularly find a variety of Myotis bats (Daubenton’s, whiskered, Natterer’s) and some brown long-eared bats.
Take a look at a few photos from our hibernation checks at Link Pot.
